How to play the NFL Grid

  1. Each square sits where a row team meets a column team.
  2. Tap a square and search for a player who played for both of its teams, at any point of his career.
  3. You have 9 guesses for the nine squares, and each player can be used once. A wrong pick costs a guess.
  4. Each right answer shows its rarity: lower means fewer seasons among that square's answers. Your rarity score adds the nine squares (an empty one counts 100).
  5. A new grid comes out every day at midnight UTC. Every square has at least three valid answers.

Where the rosters come from

The careers behind every square come from the nflverse roster files (1960–2026, CC BY 4.0, refreshed 2026-10-06), about 25,000 players. A player counts for a team when he was on its roster in a season: from 2002 on, at least one regular-season or playoff week as active, injured reserve or inactive (practice squad alone does not count). Old team names count for today's franchise, so Oakland Raiders seasons are Raiders seasons and Houston Oilers seasons are Titans seasons.

NFL Grid unlimited: questions

How does the NFL Grid work?

Each square sits where a row team meets a column team. Tap it and pick a player who played for both teams at any point of his career. Right answers stay on the board; you have nine guesses in total, and each player can be used once.

What counts as “played for” a team?

Being on that franchise’s roster in a season, in the nflverse roster files (CC BY 4.0). From 2002 on that means at least one regular-season or playoff week as active, injured reserve or inactive; practice-squad-only spells do not count. 1960–2001 use the season rosters. Old team names count for today’s franchise: Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders seasons are Raiders seasons, Houston Oilers seasons are Titans seasons.

How is the rarity score worked out?

Each right answer gets a rarity from 1 to 100: his share of all the seasons played by every valid answer for that square. A ten-year starter in a square full of short careers scores high; a one-season player scores low. Your rarity score adds the nine squares (an empty square counts 100), so lower is rarer. It is estimated from careers, not from other players’ picks.

When does a new grid come out?

Every day at midnight UTC. The board is the same for everyone, and past boards stay playable from the archive.

Is every square solvable?

Yes. A board is only used when each of its nine squares has at least three valid answers in the roster data, and the answers page for each day lists them.

Is this the official grid game?

No. AllStar Grid is independent and is not affiliated with the NFL, its teams or any other grid game. Team names are used only to say which rosters a square asks about.
